San Carlos Orthodontics for Teens

It’s time to move past the bad reputation of orthodontic braces and embrace how they make it easy to look and feel good. If your teenage kid isn’t keen on using braces, however, we can also arrange Invisalign® for teenagers.  Many of our young patients get great results from it, so find out your child is a candidate for Invisalign.

So… you need braces. What now?

Many teens may be dreading going back to the office since the orthodontist suggested they needed braces. But, braces are not as scary or embarrassing as many young people think. They come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors to make their journey to straighter teeth easier and more comfortable.

Yang Orthodontics provides a range of braces for teens. Our orthodontic team makes every visit as enjoyable as possible for our teenage patients and makes the overall transformation as seamless as can be. It doesn’t have to take long, either.

Two key factors define how long it takes to straighten teeth:

What needs correction

The treatment time depends on how severe the misalignment is. It could take only 10 months to correct mildly crooked teeth; it might take up to 24 months to complete treatment of something more serious. Patients respond differently to treatments so Dr. Yang closely monitors how each patient’s treatment progresses so he can continue to fine tune each patients’ orthodontic treatment process.

How Dedicated the Patient Is

The person’s willingness to use the appliances and follow the orthodontist’s advice play a major role in how long it will take to complete the treatment. Taking care of the braces and the appliances, strictly adhering to a good oral hygiene routine, and wearing the elastics all the time — diligence in these aspects shortens the treatment time.

Why is there a need for braces or orthodontic treatment?

We recommend coming in for a consultation if you notice any of the following issues in your children:

Protruding teeth

Difficulty chewing and biting

Accidentally biting the insides of the mouth

Extra spacing or large gaps between teeth

Difficulty brushing due to crowding of teeth

In addition to these issues, consider the following benefits of orthodontic treatment:

Prevention of tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth wear

Increased confidence and self-esteem

Improved speech

Better digestion

Orthodontic issues may lead to uneven wear, jaw issues, and tooth decay when left untreated. It is better to commit 12 to 24 months to orthodontic correction now before experiencing worse issues in the future.

Metal Braces

These traditional braces aren’t as bulky and uncomfortable as they were many years ago. They are now smaller, lighter, and customizable. You may go for colored elastics and brackets, too.

Clear Braces

If you want to be inconspicuous, clear braces are made from tooth-colored ceramic materials. They work like metal braces except that they blend in seamlessly with the teeth.

Invisalign®

Invisalign for teens are clear plastic trays that gradually straighten the teeth. They are removable and virtually invisible, making them an ideal choice for patients that demand the highest cosmetics while aligning their teeth.

This is how you take care of braces:

Brushing and Flossing

Brackets and wires might make oral hygiene challenging. Use a soft toothbrush or an interdental brush to reach the small spaces between them. When flossing, use a floss threader to get the spaces between teeth and gums.

Eating and Drinking

Orthodontists discourage eating junk food like popcorn, hard candy, sticky candy, and gum because they can damage or stick to the braces. Sugary beverages are also a no-no because they cause tooth discoloration and decay. Make sure to take out your Invisalign or clean your aligners before eating.

Alleviating Pain

Braces put pressure on teeth so they will align properly. Sometimes, adjustments are can cause some discomfort. In this case, patients may take over-the-counter pain relievers. It’s also recommended to stick to soft foods while the teeth adjust to the added pressure.
